Frequently Asked Questions
What should I prepare before the hot tub delivery?
The most important step is preparing a solid, level, and load-bearing foundation. Suitable bases include a compacted layer of stone chippings with wooden logs underneath, a wooden platform, or a cast concrete slab. Avoid placing the hot tub directly on grass or soft ground, as vegetation traps moisture, prevents ventilation, and accelerates underfloor rot.
What are the safety requirements that I should be aware of?
Do not place the hot tub too close to buildings or flammable structures. Always supervise children in or near the tub and keep the lid closed when not in use. Be cautious of slippery surfaces during freezing temperatures. Do not use the tub alone and avoid overheating the water. The recommended temperature is 37–39°C, and lower for children or people with heart conditions. We recommend using a wireless pool thermometer (Inkbird). Wear protective gloves when operating the heater, as surfaces may be hot. Edges of the chimney and heater may be sharp.
What is the heating time for the hot tub?
A 200 cm hot tub with an external log burner typically heats in 2–2.5 hours. With an integrated burner, heating takes around 1.5–2 hours. Ofuro tubs heat even faster. Heating time depends on weather, water temperature, firewood quality, and proper fire management. Keep the lid on and stir the water regularly to ensure even temperature distribution.
What should I know about the log burner?
Use only high-quality, dry wood, preferably split into smaller pieces. Poor-quality or large logs can double the heating time. Adjust airflow to control burn intensity. Maintain a steady fire. Our heaters use 316-grade stainless steel, which is corrosion-resistant and suitable for salt water and low chlorine levels (up to 4 ppm). Do not use bromine, as it damages stainless steel.
How do I clean my hot tub?
Clean the hot tub before initial use and regularly thereafter. Use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water, including the log burner. Do not use abrasive tools or harsh chemicals. Do not use ECO3SPA Step 1 or similar multi-step spa cleaners, as they may damage chrome components and internal surfaces. Rinse the log burner only after it has cooled, avoiding high-pressure water.
How do I correctly sanitise my hot tub?
Active oxygen systems are recommended. Chlorine may be used if handled correctly. Bromine must never be used. If your tub has no circulation pump, dilute all chemicals in a separate container before adding and mix the water manually. Incorrect chemical use can damage wood, metal components, and internal surfaces.
Is water pH important for my tub?
Yes. The recommended pH range is 7.2 to 7.8. Low pH can corrode components and irritate skin. High pH can cause staining, cloudy water, and dry skin. Use test strips regularly and adjust as needed.
How do I empty the hot tub?
Plan where the wastewater will drain. A hot tub can hold up to 2000 litres of water. In winter, leave the drain valve open after emptying to prevent freezing. Only drain the tub once the fire and embers have fully burned out.
What is the minimum water level before starting a fire?
Do not start the fire until the tub is completely full of water. Lighting the heater with insufficient water can damage the heater and the fibreglass or acrylic shell. Such damage is not covered by warranty.
Who should avoid using the hot tub?
- You should not use the hot tub alone.
- If you have diabetes, heart disease, or blood pressure issues, consult your doctor before use.
- If you feel sleepy or uncomfortable, exit the tub immediately.
- Drink plenty of water before and after using the hot tub.
Can I overheat the hot tub? Can hot water damage it?
Yes. Overheating can damage the hot tub, especially smaller models such as Ofuro tubs. Warm water rises to the surface, so the top layer may become significantly hotter if not mixed. If water exceeds approximately 50°C, it may soften the fibreglass and cause deformation.
How do I control water temperature in a wood-fired hot tub?
- Use dry hardwoods such as oak, birch, or maple.
- Ensure the tub is well-insulated and covered.
- Adjust airflow to regulate burn intensity.
- Stir the water regularly to distribute heat evenly.
- Monitor temperature with a reliable thermometer.
- Temperature control improves with practice.
What does an ozonator do in the hot tub?
An ozonator sanitises water by destroying bacteria and viruses. It also breaks down oils and organic contaminants, improving clarity and reducing chemical demand.
Does an ozonator replace sanitising chemicals?
No. An ozonator reduces chemical usage but does not eliminate the need for sanitiser. Without an ozonator, sanitiser levels are typically 2–3 ppm. With an ozonator, levels may be reduced to 0.5–1 ppm depending on usage and water management.
